What a Infection Control Nurse Actually Does
Infection control is one of the few nursing roles where the numbers genuinely matter day to day — and where the temptation to produce flattering ones is constant. A hand hygiene compliance figure above 95% almost always means the observation method is broken, not that practice is excellent.
- Surveillance — CAUTI, CLABSI, VAP and surgical site infection, expressed per 1,000 device days so units of different size compare fairly
- Reducing device days — usually a bigger win than technique training; a daily review of whether each catheter is still needed moves the rate and the risk together
- Hand hygiene audit — all five moments, by trained and ideally unannounced observers
- Outbreak recognition and response — only possible if baseline surveillance is already running
- Isolation and precautions — and offering workable cohorting when a full ward makes ideal isolation impossible
- Biomedical waste segregation — where most failures are bin placement and availability rather than attitude
- Antimicrobial stewardship support and liaison with microbiology

- GNM or BSc Nursing with registration plus solid clinical experience
- Comfort with rates, denominators and trending — not advanced statistics, but genuine numeracy
- Knowledge of surveillance definitions and the discipline to apply them consistently
- The ability to work through ward link nurses rather than as an inspector
