A theatre complex is the most expensive and least forgiving space in a hospital. The OT Manager is why it runs on time, or why it doesn’t.
What a OT Manager Actually Does
Everything in a theatre complex is scheduled, expensive and time-critical at once. A delayed instrument set, a missing implant size, a scrub nurse rostered into the wrong specialty list — any one of them stops a list and costs a hospital more per hour than almost anything else it does.

- GNM or BSc Nursing with registration and substantial theatre experience
- Specialty breadth — a manager who only knows one surgical specialty cannot schedule the complex
- Demonstrated stock and instrument accountability
- Surgical safety checklist and infection control credibility
- Scheduling and staffing capability, which is where formal administration training shows

How to Get There
OT is a specialist route: you almost always arrive through theatre nursing rather than from a general ward. What is rarely taught is the administrative half — scheduling logic, stock and implant accountability, staffing arithmetic and the safety documentation an assessor will test. That is the gap the nursing administration course fills for theatre nurses aiming at the manager post.
